After a long first day of travel we got up to leave for the St. Matthews Government School to help paint a section of the school and to play with the kids. While we were there we all felt very connected to the kids because we played games to get to know them. We learned that our lives are different and very similar. We are all kids that love to do the same activities, but we have very different cultures that vary in some drastic ways and some simple ways. Painting was fun since we were able to make the school better with the kids that went there. We all loved connecting with the kids. We played with a jump rope, the kids were amazing at it. We were surprised at how friendly they were. They were all waving and giving us hugs. One little girl was handing out fruit to us, and one kid gave two of us bracelets. Even if they didn’t know us, they were so friendly. We even bonded with kids who didn’t speak English. We were able to bond through the games we played and through the little bits of Spanish all of us knew. Before lunch we went and saw a new clinic that was just built by the local Peace Corps volunteer, Chase. There was a big map of the world that was going to be painted by students from the school. The clinic is going to be used for helping people in the community and surrounding areas. We made some great friends, and we’re so excited to go back on Monday and drink some more water from a bag. First we have the Mayan ruins, a tour of the zoo, and going to blue hole! Everyone is having the best time, and we will keep you posted! -Emma and Macey
